A Return for Futbol?

Updated: May 29, 2020

Two months after the all leagues were suspended, a few leagues are starting to train again and are hoping to get some games going. The Bundesliga has already returned to training and is hopefully looking to start games again in late May. The La Liga has also returned to practice, taking all the safety precautions and making sure all players test for the virus before they can begin training. The Bundesliga would be the first out of all the Top 5 European leagues to return to games. Two of Germany's neighbors, the Netherlands and France, have ended their seasons but the Bundesliga has not completed their season yet. The majority of Bundesliga clubs have nine matches left to play in this campaign - Eintracht Frankfurt and Werder Bremen have 10 - with leaders Bayern Munich four points ahead of Borussia Dortmund in second. On Monday, the German Football League announced a total of 1,724 tests had been conducted on players and staff at the 36 first and second-tier sides in Germany since last Thursday, with ten individuals returning positive coronavirus tests. Bundesliga plans have already been discussed in small groups before the meeting by different federal state representatives. A lot of ideas on how the league will be concluded, and if all the stadiums can be used, depend on lockdown restrictions being equally lifted.

As of May 16th, Bundesliga did make its official return, and several teams played but behind closed doors. As one of the many viewers that tuned in to watch the back of the Bundesliga, it was strange to see players scoring goals and celebrating to an empty stadium. For once you could hear the call outs and noises the players were making because typically they drowned out the immense sound of the home teams fan base. Borussia Dortmund, Hertha Berlin, and Wolfsburg are few teams that won their first return game to soccer. Bundesliga games will continue to be played most likely behind closed doors till June. So if you are currently missing any sport, you can tune into your TV and experience live Bundesliga games. As the restrictions start to ease up, hopefully, sports leagues and different competitions across the world will begin to be broadcasted once more. But for now, soccer fans are in joy due to the return of the Bundesliga, providing them with live soccer games and an opportunity to watch their favorite teams.
