Outer Banks: Out of This World or Out of Ideas?

Updated: May 29, 2020

By Makenna Adams and Madi Zanardelli

Outer Banks is a Netflix original series about a band of adventurous teenagers living on the fictional Kildare Island in the Outer Banks region of North Carolina. The show follows John B., Kiara, Pope, and JJ—four friends on the hunt for lost treasure. On their wild journey to riches, they make new friends, new enemies, and learn long-buried secrets about the town they grew up in. Society is split in Outer Banks, into two groups, rich and poor: the Kooks and the Pogues. The class division between the two groups is evident in both their quality of living and treatment by authority. The four main teens of the series, who identify in every aspect of their lives as Pogues, spend their summer chasing clues to a sunken ship and realizing just how divided their world truly is.

Madi thinks: In overall viewing pleasure, Outer Banks would rate a 3 out of 5 in my opinion. It was exciting, the plot wasn’t too predictable and the setting was unique. Some of the characters were caricatures so it loses points. The production quality was low; however, that makes the show a little more realistic but also hard to watch in some scenes.

There are rumors that a second season of Outer Banks will eventually come to Netflix. Personally, I think they could have ended it at Season 1, but it will be interesting to see what they add next year.

Makenna thinks: Wow. What a great show. I liked this show a lot. Right now, I am craving adventure. Living vicariously through John B and his gang was fantastic. In my opinion, the initial part of the story was predictable and unoriginal, but toward the end of the season, there were some unexpected twists that finished the season nicely. I would rate the show a 4 out of 5 because the story wasn’t particularly unique, but the lack of originality is balanced by the cast, scenery, and overall VIBE, all of which are very attractive.
